On a plot of land in Donaustraße, a side street of Kuchelauer Hafenstraße, our 17 Cabanas are being built right on the waterfront of Kuchelauer Hafen (Harbour).

The term “Cabana“ was in the eastern part of Austria originally used for huts or rooms located in public summer baths. The Cabanas could be accessed by bathers outside the opening hours of the public bath and were also suitable for overnight stays.

The Brockhaus encyclopaedia of 1911 gave for „Kabane“, a word of French origin, the meanings hut, bathing machine, cabin on a small ship or river vehicle with a wooden roof.

It was necessary to fit kitchen, living room, bathroom and sleeping area on 17 square meters, which was comfortably possible by integrating a bunk bed. In the outside area, the focus was on “the trees and the sun traversing across the sky”, and thus it also visually links the tradition of the bath with modern technology.

KUCHELAU:

The “Kuchelau“ forms a part of Vienna’s 19th district, named after the Kuchelgärten (kitchen gardens) in the area. The construction of the Kuchelauer Hafen (harbour) had already been planned for in the course of the Danube regulation.

The Kuchelauer harbour is a part of the Danube in Vienna’s north with a length of over 1.5 kilometres and a width of about 50-80 metres. The Kuchelau boasts good water quality and invites you to swim. Enjoy a bit of holiday feeling right at your doorstep, living on the waterfront with a high recreational value associated with nature and relaxation.

Schools and kindergartens can also be reached by public transport, e.g. bus line 239 (stop Marienkaserne) or S-Bahn (regional train, station Nussdorf). The Kuchelau area offers opportunities for recreation, numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as a “wine trail” leading to numerous Viennese Heurigen (wine taverns).

The centre of Vienna is a 12-minute drive away; the Heiligenstadt S-Bahn and underground station (line U4) can be reached in 5 minutes by car.

LOCATION:

The Cabana units are being built on a sunny block of land directly on the waterfront of Kuchelauer Hafen. The property adjoins both the new development of the former Tegetthoff barracks and a garden allotment precinct.

In the immediate vicinity a variety of local shops and supermarkets can be found. 

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT:

We tried to integrate the traditional meaning of “Cabana” into our design.

Our Cabanas boast compactness, multi-functionality, minimum space requirements, maximum utilisation and maximum room quality. Moreover, our urban high-quality Cabanas are equipped with innovative and efficient interior solutions. This living concept appeals especially to those who appreciate living in green surroundings close to the water, but no too far from public transport and the city centre.

DEVELOPMENT:

The houses were arranged in an arc at different distances to the water, thus resuming the original idea of ??the Cabana. The bathhouses were elevated to be able to endure centenary floods. This essential elevation emphasises the bathhouse type. 

LAYOUT:

A staircase leading to the sundeck thus provides a roofed entrance to the Cabana as well as a storage space. Bathing and water sports equipment such as stand-up paddleboards and inflatable mattresses can be easily stowed here.

A small vestibule separating the private area can be accessed from the entrance. From here you reach the 3.5 metre high living and dining area with a kitchenette giving your Cabana a special char.

With generous glazing and a spacious terrace area boasting a wonderful view over the water, you can experience the feeling of integration of the Danube into the living and dining area. 

Two separate maisonette sleeping areas can be accessed from the staircase. The ground floor features a compact bathroom with toilet, washbasin and shower. The separable sleeping alcove located behind is 2.2 metres high and offers an impressive view of Kahlenberg mountain.

A staircase on the waterfront leads to a beautiful sundeck, which enables relaxation and the view of the water all day long.
